P0441: on a Toyota

How much to fix P0441 on a Toyota? Typically $80 to $240 for evap purge valve replacement, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.

P0441 means the engine computer saw the wrong amount of fuel vapor moving through the purge line. It is an emissions fault, not a safety one, and Toyotas often set it right after a fill-up.

General meaning of P0441: The vapor system routes stored fuel fumes into the engine through a purge valve so they get burned. The computer tested how much gas moved through that path and the amount was wrong, either too little when it opened the valve or flow when it should be shut. See the full P0441 page.

Models to know about

ModelYearsWhat to know
Camry2007 to 2017Purge valve and vent valve both sit near the rear of the car, under the fuel tank area.
Corolla2009 to 2019Often the purge valve at the intake side.
Prius2010 to 2015Hybrids keep the fuel tank sealed under pressure, which changes how this system fails.
Tacoma2005 to 2015Trucks collect road debris near the vapor canister.

Common causes on a Toyota

  1. Purge valve (a small solenoid on the engine side) that sticks open. You may notice a hard start after refueling.
  2. Canister vent valve under the car that clogs with dirt or fails to close.
  3. Cracked vapor hose near the filler neck. Rust and age do this on cars from snowy states.
  4. Overfilled tank. Topping off past the click pushes liquid into the charcoal canister and soaks it.

NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2011 Toyota Camry has 624 complaints on file, and 7 of them use wording like check engine, EVAP, evaporative, purge. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.
