Snow in Winthrop

Winthrop is a small coastal town on a peninsula with a dense street grid. Many homes sit close together, so there is little room to put plowed snow.

Parking during storms

The Public Works Director may declare a Snow Emergency Parking Ban before a plowable storm; cars must be off most streets by the stated time or can be ticketed and towed. A few listed streets have one side allowed until snow stops falling. When a ban is partly lifted, park within 12 inches of the curb and leave a 10-foot lane. Winthrop Shore Drive is a state road with its own schedule.

Sidewalks

The owner or tenant of property next to a sidewalk must remove snow and ice. The town ordinance PDF (as summarized) allows snow to stay no more than 6 hours between sunrise and sunset, with fines of $25, $50 and $100 for the first, second and third offense. Snow from a sidewalk or drive may not be put in the street.
