Brakes: repair costs
Pads, rotors, calipers and the sensors that tell the car a wheel is slowing. Typical ranges across the US.
- Brake pad replacement (front)$190 to $400. Worn front brake pads are replaced with new ones. You need it if your brakes squeal or grind, the pedal feels different, or the pads are thin.
- Brake pad replacement (rear)$180 to $420. Worn rear brake pads are replaced. Rear pads usually last longer than front ones, but they still need replacing when they are thin or noisy.
- Brake rotors and pads (front)$320 to $790. Front brake discs (rotors) and pads are replaced together. It is needed when rotors are warped, grooved or too thin, which can cause shaking when braking.
- Brake caliper replacement (one wheel)$240 to $590. A sticking or leaking brake caliper is replaced. It can cause pulling to one side, a burning smell, uneven pad wear or fluid on the wheel.
- Wheel speed sensor replacement$110 to $330. A wheel speed sensor tells the ABS and traction control how fast each wheel turns. A bad one often turns on the ABS or traction light.
