Suspension, tires and alignment: repair costs
Struts, bearings, tires and alignment. Typical ranges for the Boston area.
- Struts, front pair$530 to $1,350. Worn front struts are replaced as a pair. Signs include bouncing after bumps, nose dive when braking, clunking and uneven tire wear.
- Struts / shocks, rear pair$360 to $920. Worn rear shocks or struts are replaced as a pair. They help keep the car stable and the tires planted, especially when loaded.
- Wheel alignment (four-wheel)$100 to $290. A shop adjusts the angles of your wheels so the car drives straight and tires wear evenly. Needed if the car pulls, the wheel is crooked, or after suspension work.
- Tire set (four tires installed)$560 to $1,525. A set of four new tires is mounted, balanced and installed. You need them when the tread is worn to 2/32 inch, or the sidewalls are cracked or damaged.
- Wheel bearing / hub replacement (one wheel)$260 to $820. A worn wheel bearing makes a humming or growling noise that rises with speed. It is replaced as a bearing or a whole hub assembly.
- Control arm replacement (one side)$270 to $870. A control arm connects the wheel to the car frame. A worn arm or bushing causes clunks, wandering and uneven tire wear.
- Tie rod end replacement (one side)$150 to $420. A tie rod end connects the steering to the wheel. A worn one causes clunking, loose steering and uneven tire wear.
