A tie rod end connects the steering to the wheel. A worn one causes clunking, loose steering and uneven tire wear.

Questions to ask before you say yes

Can you do it yourself?

A moderate DIY with basic tools, but the rusted joint can fight you and you must get an alignment right after, or the tires will wear fast.

Common questions

What does a worn tie rod feel like?

Loose or wandering steering, a clunk over bumps, shaking in the wheel and uneven tire wear on the inside or outside edge.

Why do I need an alignment?

The tie rod sets the toe angle of the wheel. When it changes, the toe changes, so an alignment is needed to protect the tires and keep the car straight.

Is it safe to drive with one?

No, not for long. If a tie rod separates, you can lose steering control of that wheel. Replace it as soon as it is found loose.

How much does tie rod end replacement (one side) cost?

A typical range across the US is $130 to $380. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
