The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.
Not a repair shop, estimates only. Typical range, estimate. Not a quote. Your car, parts and shop change the number.
A shop reads the trouble codes from your car's computer and tests the system the code points to. You need it when a warning light is on or the car runs rough.

Questions to ask before you say yes
- Is the diagnostic fee applied to the repair if I approve it?
- Will you tell me the exact code numbers?
- What tests did you do beyond reading the code?
- Can I get the findings in writing before any repair?
Can you do it yourself?
Reading codes is an easy DIY with a $20-40 scanner or a free parts-store read; deciding which part is bad usually takes testing and experience.
Common questions
Does a code tell me which part to replace?
Not always. A code says which circuit or system saw a problem, not which part failed. A wire, a connector, or a related part can set the same code, so the test step matters.
Can I clear the code and keep driving?
Clearing it only turns the light off. If the cause is still there, the light comes back, and a flashing light means stop driving soon to avoid engine damage.
Why do some shops charge a fee to read codes?
Reading is quick, but finding the cause takes a technician's time and equipment. Many parts stores read codes for free, which is a good first step.
How much does diagnostic scan (check engine light) cost?
A typical range across the US is $55 to $250. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
