The rubber timing belt keeps engine valves and pistons in sync and must be replaced on schedule. If it breaks, many engines suffer major internal damage.

Common questions
When should a timing belt be replaced?
Often every 60,000 to 105,000 miles or 5 to 7 years. Your manual has the exact number, and age matters as well as miles.
What happens if it snaps?
On many engines the valves hit the pistons and cause very costly damage. On others the engine just stops.
Why is the water pump replaced with it?
The pump is behind the belt, so replacing it at the same time saves labor if it fails later.
How much does timing belt replacement cost?
A typical range across the US is $460 to $1,550. That is an estimate from parts prices, labor hours and the local labor rate, not a quote.
