This is the range for the most common fix, oxygen sensor replacement (one sensor). Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The computer controls the heater in the oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter on the side without cylinder 1. This time the control circuit read too low, which usually means an open circuit, a broken wire or a heater element that has burned out.
- Safe to drive?
- Usually yes, for now
- Most common cause
- Failed sensor heater
Safe to drive. The light stays on.

What you may notice
- Check-engine light on
- Slightly worse fuel economy
- Rough idle for the first minute
Common causes, most likely first
- Failed sensor heater
- Open wiring
- Blown fuse
- Computer driver
Check this first
Check the heater fuse, then look at the sensor wire for a break and the plug for loose pins. An open circuit can come from a pulled-out connector, which is the cheapest repair of all.

| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0051 questions
Heater purpose?
It heats the sensor so the computer can control fuel soon after a start. A low-circuit code means that heater is not drawing power, so the sensor warms slowly or not at all.
Wiring?
Check it. A cut or burned wire near the exhaust gives a low reading, and so does a plug that has worked loose. These cost much less than a sensor, so look before buying.
Cost?
Moderate, with the sensor being the larger part. Get the estimate to say bank 2 upstream so you know which sensor is being replaced and can compare it with other quotes.
