P0087: Fuel pressure too low
How much to fix P0087? Typically $370–$1,075.
How this range is built
| Part of the job | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | $150 | $500 |
| Labor: 2 to 3.5 hours × $110 to $150 an hour | $220 | $525 |
| Fees: shop supplies, disposal, diagnostics | $0 | $30 |
| Total, rounded | $370 | $1,075 |
The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.

This is the range for the most common fix, fuel pump replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The fuel rail feeds every injector, and a sensor on it reports the pressure to the computer. The reading is lower than the computer wants. With too little pressure, the injectors cannot deliver enough fuel, especially when you ask for more power on hills or when passing.
- Safe to drive?
- Short trips only
- Most common cause
- Weak fuel pump
Drive only if it runs well; low fuel pressure can cause stalling, so avoid highways and pull over if it stumbles.

What you may notice
- Stalling
- Hesitation
- Hard starting
- Loss of power under load
Common causes, most likely first
- Weak fuel pump
- Clogged fuel filter
- Failing pressure regulator
- Leaking injector or line
- Low fuel level or bad fuel
Check this first
Check that the tank has more than a quarter of fuel, since a low tank can starve a weak pump. Ask the shop to put a gauge on the rail and compare pressure at idle and when the engine is revved.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P0087
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Fuel injector replacement (one injector) | $170 to $820 |
| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
| Mass airflow sensor replacement | $120 to $390 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0087 questions
Can a clogged fuel filter cause this?
Yes. A clogged filter restricts flow, so the pump cannot reach the pressure the computer wants. On many cars the filter is part of the pump module in the tank, so the pump and filter get replaced together.
Is it dangerous?
A sudden stall at highway speed is the real danger, along with sluggish power when you merge. If the car hesitates or stumbles under load, avoid fast roads and have it checked soon.
Why does it only happen under load?
Demand for fuel is highest when you press the pedal hard. A tired pump can keep up at idle but cannot deliver enough volume under load, so the pressure sags only when you need power.
How much does it cost to fix P0087?
The most common fix, fuel pump replacement, has a typical range of $370 to $1,075 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
