P0171: on a Chevrolet

How much to fix P0171 on a Chevrolet? Typically $90 to $460 for vacuum leak repair, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.

On a Chevrolet, P0171 often comes with a stumble at idle or on cold starts. GM engines have a few well-known air leaks, so a shop that knows the model can usually find it faster than a general guess.

General meaning of P0171: The computer keeps adding extra fuel to make up for something, and it has reached its limit on the side with cylinder 1. This is called running lean, and it usually means unmetered air is sneaking in or fuel is not getting through. See the full P0171 page.

Models to know about

ModelYearsWhat to know
Silverado 15002007 to 2018The 5.3 and 4.8 truck engines hit this when the intake plenum or injector O-rings leak.
Equinox2010 to 2017The 2.4 and 3.6 engines often set it with a leaking PCV system.
Malibu2008 to 2015The 2.4 four-cylinder is the common one, with intake and PCV hoses.
Tahoe2007 to 2020Same engine family as the Silverado, same weak spots.

Common causes on a Chevrolet

  1. Cracked PCV hose or a worn PCV valve cover on the 2.4 four-cylinder. This is a common repeat cause on Equinox and Malibu.
  2. Intake manifold gasket or throttle body gasket leaking on the 5.3 and 6.2 V8s once the engine has a lot of miles.
  3. Dirty mass airflow sensor, especially on trucks that run oily air filters or have a big aftermarket intake.
  4. A fuel pressure problem, such as a weak pump or a clogged filter in the pump module, on higher-mileage trucks.

NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox has 751 complaints on file, and 126 of them use wording like check engine, lean, P0171, rough idle; the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has 284 complaints on file, and 12 of them use wording like check engine, lean, P0171, rough idle. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.
