P0171: on a Ford

How much to fix P0171 on a Ford? Typically $90 to $460 for vacuum leak repair, the most common fix. This is an estimate, not a quote.

Ford sells many engines, so the cause behind a lean code depends on which one you have. A plain 2.5 four-cylinder and a turbocharged EcoBoost fail in very different ways.

General meaning of P0171: The computer keeps adding extra fuel to make up for something, and it has reached its limit on the side with cylinder 1. This is called running lean, and it usually means unmetered air is sneaking in or fuel is not getting through. See the full P0171 page.

Models to know about

ModelYearsWhat to know
F-1502011 to 2020The 3.5 EcoBoost and 5.0 engines see this with intake leaks and boost hose issues.
Escape2008 to 2019Both the 2.5 and the 1.6 EcoBoost can set it, for different reasons.
Explorer2011 to 2019The 3.5 V6 is common here.
Focus2012 to 2018The 2.0 direct-injection engine has its own fuel-side causes.

Common causes on a Ford

  1. Boost leaks on turbocharged EcoBoost engines. A loose charge-air pipe or cracked intercooler hose lets air in or out and confuses the fuel math.
  2. Intake manifold or gasket leaks on the 3.5 and 5.0 engines as the plastic and rubber age.
  3. Airflow sensor contamination on 2.5 and 3.0 engines that have a dirty or oiled air filter.
  4. Low fuel pressure from a weak pump or a failing high-pressure pump on direct-injection engines.

NHTSA's public complaint file shows how owners describe this kind of trouble: the 2014 Ford Escape has 2,089 complaints on file, and 290 of them use wording like check engine, lean, P0171, hesitat. Complaints are owner reports, not proof of a cause.
