This is the range for the most common fix, ignition coil replacement (one coil). Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.

The computer switches coil E on and off to fire a spark plug and checks the circuit for the right response. It saw an electrical fault on coil E, the fifth coil in the engine maker's lettering. That cylinder may not spark correctly, so the engine can misfire and run rough.

What you may notice

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Failed ignition coil
  2. Loose connector
  3. Worn spark plug
  4. Wiring fault

Check this first

Swap coil E with another coil on the same bank, clear the code and drive. If the code follows the coil, replace it. If it stays with the same position, look for a loose connector or damaged wire.

P0355 questions

Is coil E cylinder 5?

Often, but not always. The letter follows the maker's numbering, so the shop confirms with the firing order or a scan tool before swapping anything, to be sure they are working on the right coil.

Do I replace all coils?

Only the failed one, unless more test bad. If the car is old, though, other coils may be close behind, so ask the shop what the others look like before deciding.

Why do they fail?

Heat from the engine, age, and worn spark plugs that make the coil work harder to push spark across a wide gap. Changing plugs on schedule helps coils last longer.
