How this range is built
| Part of the job | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Parts | $35 | $120 |
| Labor: 0.6 to 1.3 hours × $110 to $150 an hour | $66 | $195 |
| Fees: shop supplies, disposal, diagnostics | $0 | $20 |
| Total, rounded | $100 | $340 |
The hourly rate is the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 average pay for this trade in the US, $27.13 an hour, times 4 to 5.5 to cover what a shop bills (overhead, tools, insurance, profit). Parts are a band from budget aftermarket to the manufacturer part. Full method.

This is the range for the most common fix, camshaft position sensor replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The camshaft sensor is sending a signal, but its pattern or timing does not match what the computer expects from the crankshaft. That can come from a worn sensor, a damaged tooth wheel, or a stretched timing chain that lets the cam slip slightly out of position.
- Safe to drive?
- Short trips only
- Most common cause
- Failing camshaft sensor
Short, gentle drives only; it may stall or hesitate.

What you may notice
- Rough running
- Hard starting
- Occasional stalling
- Check-engine light on
Common causes, most likely first
- Failing camshaft sensor
- Stretched timing chain
- Damaged sensor wheel
- Loose sensor mounting
- Wiring noise
Check this first
Ask the shop to look at the sensor signal on an oscilloscope or a scan tool. A bad pattern shows right away and tells them whether to look at the sensor or the timing parts, before any parts are replaced.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P0341
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Timing chain replacement | $1,125 to $2,550 |
| Crankshaft position sensor replacement | $110 to $360 |
| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0341 questions
Is timing involved?
It can be. The signal pattern shows whether the chain has jumped or stretched. If the pattern is clean but misplaced, timing is the suspect. If it is noisy, the sensor or wiring is more likely.
How is it different from P0340?
P0340 means the computer got no usable signal at all. P0341 means a signal is arriving, but it is out of range or in the wrong place. Because of that, P0341 leans a little more toward timing trouble.
Do I need a new chain?
Only if the signal tests and the timing check point there. A chain job is large, so a shop should show you the evidence first, such as a stretch measurement or the cam and crank signals out of sync.
How much does it cost to fix P0341?
The most common fix, camshaft position sensor replacement, has a typical range of $100 to $340 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
