This is the range for the most common fix, oil and filter change. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
The oil pressure sensor reports how hard oil is pushing through the engine. The reading does not fit the engine's speed, such as being too high or low or jumping around. It might be a failing sensor, but it could also be real oil pressure trouble, so low oil is the first thing to rule out.
- Safe to drive?
- Short trips only
- Most common cause
- Faulty oil pressure sensor
If the oil light is on or you hear knocking, stop at once. Otherwise check the oil level and drive only to a shop.

What you may notice
- Oil warning light
- Fluctuating oil gauge
- Ticking noise
Common causes, most likely first
- Faulty oil pressure sensor
- Low oil level
- Wrong or dirty oil
- Worn oil pump
- Wiring fault
Check this first
With the engine off and the car on level ground, wait a few minutes, then pull the dipstick and check the level and color. If oil is low, top it up and note how fast it drops. If it is full and clean, ask for a mechanical pressure test.

Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P0521 questions
Is low oil pressure serious?
Yes. Low oil pressure can wear the engine quickly. If the oil light is on while you drive, especially with a knocking sound, pull over and shut off the engine at once, then call for a tow.
Could it be only the sensor?
Often, because sensors fail more than oil pumps. A shop can attach a mechanical gauge at the engine to prove the real pressure, which confirms whether the sensor or the engine is at fault.
What oil should I use?
Use the grade printed in your owner manual, and look for the matching approval symbol on the bottle. The wrong thickness can change pressure readings and also affect the engine's wear over time.

The most common fix, oil and filter change, has a typical range of $70 to $170 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
