This is the range for the most common fix, throttle body replacement. Which repair your car needs depends on a proper diagnosis.
An electronic throttle has a small motor that opens and closes the throttle valve. The computer commanded it to a position and the valve did not move there as expected, or moved too slowly. The computer limits engine power to stay safe when this happens.
- Safe to drive?
- No, get it looked at first
- Most common cause
- Dirty or carbon-clogged throttle body
The car often drops into reduced power mode. Do not drive in traffic or at speed until it is fixed.

What you may notice
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Rough or surging idle
- Slow response to the pedal
- Check-engine light and sometimes a wrench light
Common causes, most likely first
- Dirty or carbon-clogged throttle body
- Failing throttle motor or body
- Wiring or connector fault
- Low battery voltage
Check this first
Ask whether cleaning the throttle body is enough before replacing it, and have the battery voltage tested.
Other repairs that sometimes fix P2101
| Repair | Typical range, US |
|---|---|
| Throttle body cleaning | $75 to $180 |
| Diagnostic scan (check engine light) | $55 to $250 |
| Battery replacement | $150 to $470 |
Before you pay
- Ask the shop what test showed this part is the cause, not just that the code appeared.
- Ask for parts and labor listed separately, and for the hours.
- Ask for a written OK before any extra work. Many states require written authorization before repairs.

P2101 questions
Will cleaning the throttle body help?
Sometimes, if carbon buildup is the reason, since a clean bore lets the blade move freely. If the motor itself is worn, cleaning will not hold, and the throttle body needs replacement.
Why is my car in limp mode?
The computer limits the throttle opening when it cannot trust the throttle, so you can still reach a safe place. Power feels weak, but the car will usually still drive at lower speeds.
Does the new throttle need programming?
Many do, and the step is called a relearn. A scan tool teaches the computer the closed position and idle setting. Ask the shop whether the relearn is included in the price.

The most common fix, throttle body replacement, has a typical range of $290 to $900 across the US. It is an estimate built from parts prices and local labor wages, not a quote. Your car and shop change it.
